Why the iPhone 17 Pro is still the smartest upgrade you can make this year

A new chip, a reworked aluminium body, and the best camera Apple has put in a Pro phone. Here is what actually matters before you buy, and where to get it on a UK plan that makes sense.

Why upgrade at all

Most years, a new iPhone is a small refresh. The 17 Pro is different. Apple redesigned the body, added a proper cooling system for the first time, and pushed the camera and battery further than the last few generations combined.

If your current phone is two or more years old, this is the generation where the upgrade is actually felt, not just read about on a spec sheet. The single biggest change is a cooling system built into the body, which is the reason the phone stays fast for longer instead of slowing down after ten minutes of heavy use.

Build and design

Apple moved back to an aluminium body for the 17 Pro, built around an internal cooling plate that pulls heat away from the chip. It sounds like a downgrade on paper, but in practice it means the phone runs cooler and holds its speed for longer under load.

Performance

The A19 Pro chip is built on a newer, more efficient manufacturing process, with a 6-core processor and a 6-core graphics chip that now includes dedicated AI processing in every core. Combined with the improved cooling, this is the first iPhone that can hold peak graphics performance through a long gaming session instead of slowing down as it heats up.

  • 16-core Neural Engine handles on-device AI tasks, such as photo processing and Apple Intelligence features, without needing an internet connection.
  • Steadier performance over time is the main gain: tasks that used to slow the phone down after ten minutes now hold steady for much longer.
  • 12GB of memory gives it room for smoother multitasking and the newer AI features Apple has been adding.

Display

The 6.3-inch screen uses ProMotion, which adjusts its refresh rate up to 120 times per second, so scrolling and games feel smooth while the battery is not drained unnecessarily on simpler screens. Outdoor brightness reaches up to 3,000 nits, which makes a real difference when reading the screen in direct sunlight. An Always-On display keeps the time and key information visible without turning on the full screen.

Camera

All three rear cameras are now 48 megapixels: the main camera, the ultra-wide camera, and the telephoto camera. The telephoto lens supports up to 8x optical-quality zoom, which is a genuine improvement for travel photos, wildlife, or anything far away. The front camera has also been upgraded to 24 megapixels and can capture wider group photos without needing to turn the phone sideways.

Audio

Four studio-quality microphones give the 17 Pro noticeably clearer voice recording, with background noise reduction that helps in windy or noisy environments. Video recording and playback both support Dolby Atmos, and Spatial Audio with head tracking makes sound on supported AirPods feel like it is coming from around you rather than directly in your ears.

  • Four studio microphones for clearer voice memos, video audio, and phone calls in noisy places.
  • Dolby Atmos for recording and playback, giving video a fuller sound.
  • Spatial Audio with head tracking on supported AirPods.

Battery and charging

The redesigned inside of the phone makes room for the largest battery Apple has fitted into a Pro-sized iPhone, good for up to roughly 31 hours of video playback. Fast charging takes the battery to about 50% in around 20 minutes with a compatible charger, and wireless charging now supports the faster Qi2 standard through MagSafe.

Connectivity

  • 5G support across the bands UK networks are expanding, for faster mobile data.
  • Wi-Fi 7 for noticeably faster home and office networking, on compatible routers.
  • Bluetooth 6 and USB-C with fast transfer speeds for moving photos and video to a computer.
  • Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection, which can contact emergency services even outside normal signal range.

Where to buy it

Buying outright is one option. For most people in the UK, an EE plan spreads the cost and adds network benefits that would otherwise be paid for separately.

Why get it through EE

  • UK-wide 5G coverage, the largest and fastest 5G network in the country, built for the speeds this phone can use.
  • Flexible monthly plans, so the cost of the phone is spread out instead of paid upfront.
  • Trade-in credit, putting the value of an old phone toward the cost of the new one.
  • EE Perks and Stay Connected data, ongoing benefits and uninterrupted data included with the plan at no extra cost.
